I decided since I could not get out east to see Nicolo-Koba, the best parc in the country, I would head back down south, past Dakar to M'Bour, which is near the Siné-Saloum Delta. I stayed at the Hotel Coco Beach, right on the beach. 15000 CFA got me a big room with air-conditioning. Right down the beach is a fascinating fish market, where you can go and watch the day's catch being hauled into the pirogues from giant nets. The guy working at the hotel desk was able to arrange a day trip into the delta for me to see the mangroves and some birds. The highlight of the trip was a flock of beautiful pink flamingos which was rare for that time of year.
One other day I spent with the guy from the hotel walking in the town (not so easy after it rained), bargaining for some gifts (12 beaded necklaces 4500 CFA, 2 medium masks, 1 small mask, 1 pirogue peanut dish, and 1 carved elephant 12500 CFA), and meeting many of his friends in the town.
My last day in Senegal was spent getting back to Dakar for my late flight home. After arriving in Dakar, I spent the day shopping for a few last minute souvenirs (21 beaded necklaces 5500 CFA, 2 large cloth paintings with 4 necklaces 10000 CFA, african wood carved game 4000 CFA, small kora guitar 1000 CFA, and last but not least, tacky car rapide replica 600 CFA) and relaxing in a café. A peaceful end to my first, but certainly not last, voyage in West Africa.
